Calvono was founded on a simple principle: giving men easy access to actual experts in treating hair loss who will quickly and discreetly provide effective therapy. We are two board-certified dermatologists, who are business partners in our brick-and-mortar practice outside of Philadelphia. We realized that in-person visits to medical offices often required a significant cost and time-commitment for men who just wanted their hair to grow back.
That’s why we created Calvono to deliver the best of both worlds – the convenience of an online consultation with the knowledge and experience of board-certified dermatologists. We also wanted to include the ability to send an unlimited number of messages to your personal physician any time, without the need to schedule appointments or make office visits.
When considering starting this business, we were very surprised to see that some other companies treating hair loss online were using non-Dermatologists to conduct the virtual visits. Sometimes the visits were not even being performed by physicians at all. Knowing the significant training Dermatologists receive in specifically treating different forms of hair loss (also called alopecia), we decided we would only have the visits conducted by Dermatologists, and, of course, only offer truly effective medications.

For years, the only treatments available for male-pattern hair loss were oral finasteride and topical minoxidil. Several recent articles demonstrated the significant benefit of the topical formulation of finasteride. In fact, it worked as well as the pill! The blood levels of finasteride when applied topically were, not surprisingly, far below the levels seen in people taking the oral form (pill). This should significantly reduce the chance of some of the unpleasant side effects that can be seen with oral finasteride.
However, there is no commercially available topical formulation of finasteride. This means it has to be compounded by a compounding pharmacy. At Calvono, we work with pharmacies that have vast experience in compounding these types of topical medications. We work closely with these pharmacies to ensure the prescriptions are consistent in quality and shipped quickly and discreetly.
One other breakthrough in therapy was not really a breakthrough at all! It was discovered that low dose pills of minoxidil, the same ingredient used topically for many years, was very effective in regrowing hair. Drs. Altman and Patel used this medication many times to treat men in their offices and were very impressed by the results. The popularity of this therapy for hair loss grew after a New York Times article highlighted its surprising effectiveness. Drs. Altman and Patel decided this would definitely be one of the products they would offer along with the topical formulation of finasteride. This combination adds the benefits of both medications and became the cornerstone of Calvono.
